We are really pleased to announce ChuYan Wang as our cultural lead and guide in an exciting exploration of Hanfu, the cultural dress style of the Han Chinese community.
As the face and voice behind Mochi Hanfu on TikTok, we have come to appreciate ChuYan for her work ethic when it comes to research, her gorgeous styling and her attention to detail and we simply adored her take on Cultural Style Week.
While ChuYan lives in Ohio in the USA, she has always been interested in traditional Asian clothing. For her, discovering the immensely diverse scope of Hanfu dress has been an important affirmation of her identity. It solidified the already strong connection she feels towards her Han Chinese roots and led to the creation of a social media platform which she uses to educate and inform others on the intricacies of Hanfu clothes, make-up and hair styling. She feels that her mission is two-fold. On the one hand, she is thrilled to connect the Asian and Chinese diaspora with visual representations of their cultural heritage. But she also wants to spread a more positive image of China and the rich history of its fashion trends over many centuries.
The Han Chinese represent the world’s single largest ethnic group and they number over one billion people. Under their influence, vital advances such as the invention of paper and printing were nurtured. Central to Han culture is the elegance of Hanfu dress - a cultural style that goes back five thousand years.
ChuYan finds great confidence in embracing her Hanfu heritage and its history inspires her. For her TikTok channel, she puts together her breathtaking ensembles with an eye for detail and deceptive ease of application. She is a wizard with her make-up brush, adding little details such as East Asian YeDian with an enviably deft hand.
Above all, she loves recreating living replicas of ancient images. In recent posts, she brought several of the Chinese flower goddesses to life. But ChuYan truly warms to her subject, when discussing the history and evolution of Hanfu.
This brings us to the announcement of our upcoming collaboration with ChuYan, which will feature an exploration of Hanfu Through The Ages.
