Families from across East and North London came together over the late May Bank Holiday weekend to celebrate culture, creativity and community through a series of free Heritage Crafts workshops delivered as part of the inaugural Cultural Heritage Month 2026.

The programme began on Monday 25 May at the Nisbet Community Hall in Hackney before continuing across 30 and 31 May at Mall Wood Green in Haringey, welcoming children, parents and carers to enjoy hands-on creative activities inspired by cultures from around the world.

Designed to be fun, accessible and family-friendly, the workshops encouraged participants to explore cultural heritage through arts and crafts, colour, pattern and storytelling. Across sessions, families enjoyed making their own creations, learning about different traditions and spending quality time together in welcoming community environments.

Whether decorating, designing or simply getting creative together, the workshops provided an opportunity for people of all ages to celebrate the rich diversity of the communities that make London such a vibrant place to live. The relaxed drop-in format created opportunities for new friendships, conversations and shared experiences, demonstrating how creativity can bring communities together.

The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many families commenting on the welcoming atmosphere, the variety of activities available and the opportunity to take part in free cultural activities during the school holiday weekend.

The Heritage Crafts programme formed part of the first Cultural Heritage Month, an initiative celebrating culture, identity and community through creative activities that encourage people to explore, share and appreciate heritage together.

We would like to thank everyone who attended the workshops and helped create such vibrant and welcoming events. We are especially grateful to our funding partners, ConnectED Communities Fund (Sovereign Network Group) for supporting the Hackney event, and Mall Wood Green for supporting the two-day Wood Green programme and providing a welcoming space for local families.

We look forward to delivering more creative community activities that celebrate culture, inspire creativity and bring people together.
